Description
Created in collaboration with Steven Sabados, “Savannah” presents a stylized tropical scene built from loose linework and soft, textured washes. A pair of lions, one reclining, one standing, introduce an interaction within the composition, while simplified palm trees and plant forms provide structure without crowding the space. The three colour variations subtly shift the overall character of the piece. Neutral features a warm, sandy ground that reinforces the earthy palette and gives the scene a grounded, sunbaked quality. Sky replaces this with a soft blue wash, cooling the composition and lending it a lighter, more open feel. Blush introduces a muted pink tone that gently warms the scene, adding a softer, more decorative quality without overpowering the natural elements. The overall effect is illustrative and relaxed, with small variations in texture adding depth.
This piece is rooted in a deeply personal history. Steven Sabados’ grandmother, Anna, began her artistic career at a young age, and in 1935 created delicate drawings on onionskin paper depicting lions and palm trees in Germany. Remarkably preserved, these original works were rediscovered and carefully scanned. Ninety-one years later, Sabados added his own artistic touch to her work using gouache. The result is a thoughtful continuation of her work and a meaningful reconnection and celebration of a shared artistic legacy.
